It appears that the flow of water in this situation is creating tension in the line and aiding the cast. What should be done by the caster when the flow is not providing significant tension or is diminishing tension in the line? Is the goal of developing a well-timed D-Loop to have tension in the line ?

Great video Ian. This video clip emphasizes the most essential phases and movements (lifting, wrist move, tempo and pace) in Spey cast. Even when you get it to look easy it definitely isn't it. But I hope that by practising I'll manage to do it properly some day. See you soon 👍🇫🇮

Thanks for the comment and question. I love the analogy about clever fish. Maybe you’re right, but who knows. The rod allocation on each beat were decided by the particular landowners, but generally, since the early 80s many more rods fish the river. As an example the Gordon Castle water which fishes around 40 rods would have fished with around 8 when the fishing was good. Tulchan 24 right now, would have been 8. It all changed when estates began to sell their rods. The lower numbers earlier will have been friends of the owners only.

What a lovely piece of water Ian. I would prefer a wee bit more of a current through it but as you say make the most of the conditions you are presented with. My first Salmon was on a day like that on the Don. When we stopped at Sloan's in Inverurie for that special fly that we would invariably be drawn to in any tackle shop that is designed for anglers not fish and adorns our tackle boxes until the next clear out we were told to forget fishing turn back for home a get a tan. What do they know about fishing!!! Bob Patterson aye used to say keep fishing as there is usually a stupid one that will take a fly and sometimes there is, in fact do we all just catch stupid fish. I wonder what it would be like to hook a clever one, maybe they are the ones that snap us or throw the hook or escape at the net. I always enjoy your content but especially from rivers I have wet a line on but you are on beats from a different part of the river. I have a question that has always intrigued me. How is it worked out how many rods can fish a beat?

Great video. Lost my braided loop other day on a tree and had to go onto intermediate line as didn't know how to fix it the way you showed.

Too often I have seen fisher people rant and rave at canoeists …in my experience all it does it put there backs up and cause bad feeling. Best to be courteous like you were and hope they repay you by keeping as far to the edge of the pool as possible. Hope Kobe enjoyed the eel !😂

That looked like a "Bonnie" bit oh water that just looked fishy. Why is it the fish are always lying just off the far bank. I always wonder if the Ghillies on the other bank are saying the same thing "the fish are lying just off the far bank".

im pleased to see you don't recast after a duff cast Ian , repeated recasting to get that extra line out just puts fish down and off the take.

Hi Ian & Andrew, Its all we have is memory's. and listening to your fishing memory's was fantastic. The statement Andy made that we only have 20 years left to fish for a salmon made me very mad. What has 40 years of pandering to these Biologists & scientist done for the salmon. Their achievement is putting the salmon on the red list of endanger species. You name one river that's full of fish. Ian you stated the riparian owners are hand cuffed and can't do anything, we have to be more active and get the hatcheries up and running. To finish, personal its not 20 years its more like 10 years if we are lucky. Alan Robinson

Please please please continue to chat to that very knowledgeable gentleman and put it out on RUclips because I for one could listen to the two of you all day. The one thing I liked about Lewis & Harris albeit twenty years ago when I was a Director of The Stornoway Angling Assoc Ltd was that on every Saturday which was handover day on North Harris Estates incorporating Amhuinnsuidhe Castle the Stornoway Angling Assoc & Harris Angling club took it in turns to fish the water and I certainly made the most of those opportunities to fish Voshmid and some of the other lochs on the estate. This meant that the locals got to enjoy what the guests were enjoying for £10 each rather than the rumoured £20k a week or five days as they had. You know my thoughts on hatcheries and the pair of you I assume are erring to that way of thinking. My question to the two of you is if Atlantic Salmon are going to die out in our rivers within twenty years why are we not encouraging the Pinks to set up breeding stocks to continue the sport that we all love. If they are overcoming the obstacles to set up new colonies in our rivers could they get to the stage of population you guys enjoyed in past years longer ago than the twenty five of my Salmon fishing experience. I know I am going to take some heat for this but I am still asking the question.

I remember a gillie telling me of a lady who used to somehow tie her fly straight to the main line and still caught fish, since then I've been less bothered about what I use. Having said that, I still carry both clear and brown Maxima and use whichever feels right on the day.

I don’t think that salmon are very leader shy, but since swapping from brown maxima to a long fluorocarbon one I’ve caught a lot more day time seatrout

Hi Ian I am new to your channel. I have been fly fishing over 20 years mostly trout or sea trout ,recently even sea bass here in the north of Ireland. Thanks Ian - I think I have misunderstood this move and been doing it wrong for years. I have been lifting the line off the water and sweeping the rod around to the anchor point by dipping my shoulders - rather than change the elevation using the plane of my wrist. I sense it is why I get stuck as I then try to lift the rod upwards and move into the forward stroke. I hope my explanation makes sense. Thanks again - really enjoy watching your video clips.

I was going to ask about using just a 15ft sinking tip, however your friend mentioned it! I’m aware about getting the weight of line and fly up to the surface. Which I then proceed to do the roll cast, the part where you mentioned about not stopping as soon as you have made the roll cast, has just answered a lot of my head scratching 😂 for me! Some very nice fish there. Anytime when I am allowed to watch fishing on TV and the wife is in attendance she always comments that she is waiting for an ugly one to be caught as they are all belters, crackers or nice.
